Using diagnostic information effectively
What do I need
to use diagnostics?
In a real life situation you may encounter problems while using your X Server. This could be either due to incomplete installation, insufficient resource, version incompatibility with the application and so on. The X Server allows you to generate diagnostic information which should be sent to the Frontier Technologies Technical Support. This helps resolving your problems quickly and effectively.
What all does diagnostics include?
The X Server, generates system logs and protocol traces. Important information such as time the server started, warning messages and fatal errors, which cause the server to abort gracefully, are logged to the system log.
The protocol traces log the requests, replies, events and errors of the X Server protocol. These traces are used for advanced diagnostics.
How do I generate a diagnostic trace for the Technical Support ?
-
Start the X Config application
-
Check the box titled 'Generate Traces for Tech Support' in the traces table
-
Set up the rest of the configuration exactly as is needed to reproduce the problem.
-
Start the X Server and follow the minimum number of steps, which lead you to the problem. Note that when the traces are ON, the X Server will appear to operate slowly.
-
After the problem has shown itself, close the server.
-
Start X View and in the checkbox in the toolbar, identify and select the trace which has been generated. The date and time of trace generation are displayed to allow easy identification.
-
Use Save As to save the trace to a file which you could mail to the Frontier Tech Support.
-
Clear the checkbox 'Generate Traces for Tech Support' in the X Config.
